Challenges
Getting a remote, multilingual, constantly rotating workforce safe and site-ready fast
CPC Engineering is one of many firms employed at DeGrussa, the high-grade copper-gold operation 900km north-east of Perth that put Western Australia on the map as one of the region's leading copper producers.
DeGrussa is accessed by charter flight and runs on a fly-in fly-out roster. A multilingual and constantly rotating workforce raises the stakes on every induction. Whatever information they're given before mobilisation must be understood by the time they arrive on-site.
Operating across remote and regional WA, CPC Engineering faced a common but critical problem: its documentation wasn't working hard enough for new people in the field.
Inductions — slow to complete, with poor knowledge retention among workers. Some FIFO workers get bogged down with having to do several inductions unrelated to their specific fields of work.
Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) — word-dense, lengthy documents with little visual guidance, built on an unrealistic expectation that people would read them cover to cover. The tick and flick culture.
Forms & field documentation — Toolbox talks, pre-starts and paper-based Take 5s are boring and poorly documents, they are difficult to store, and create compliance gaps.
Prior to SpaceDraft the Quality and General HSE Inductions alone were running to 60 pages each that every new contractor had to work through before mobilising.
Induction documents for all the CPC Engineering sites were slow to read, harder still to retain, and very uninspiring. The moment a process changed on site, the PDF in someone's inbox was already out of date.
For a workforce rotating in and out on FIFO cycles across multiple sites, that gap between "what the document says" and "what's actually true on site right now" was a real safety risk, not just an administrative headache.
Solutions
Four days of induction reduced down to one hour of effective visualisation
SpaceDraft rebuilt CPC's inductions as single interactive, visual experiences that could be updated live in real time as information changed.
One access point, everything a contractor needs to safely orientate and, just as importantly, arrive feeling welcomed and prepared rather than processed.
Instead of two 60-page documents to read cover to cover, workers could receive an interactive picture link in an email or scan a QR code on site to mentally rehearse the job about to happen through a guided, visual walkthrough with voiceover. SpaceDraft was invented by Behavioural Scientists built for a phone screen and a FIFO worker's reality, not a desk and a lever-arch folder.
The added human layer of voice and visuals gives context that plain text can't, which matters for a diverse, multilingual workforce working through it independently, often before they've even left Perth.
Because it lives on SpaceDraft rather than in a printed pack, it can be updated the moment something on site changes. CPC updates the scene once; every contractor accessing that QR code, whether they scan it in Perth before they fly out or on the frontline, they see the current version of what they need to know.
No reprinting a manual. No emailing round a new PDF and hoping everyone opens it. No gap between the induction and the reality of the site.
People also simply retain visual information better than text: research (originally an OSHA memo, widely validated since, including in John Medina's Brain Rules) has found people retain 65% of information delivered visually after three days, against roughly 10% for text or verbal delivery alone.
